Community Center at Visitation

April 8th, 2015

Community Center at Visitation, located in Kensington, is a community outreach center dedicated to providing a safe environment for both children and adults. The Center offers a variety of programs and activities to the general public, including a food pantry, education classes, and sports leagues. The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia awarded the Center a $5,000 grant to re-new their Visitation Sports Program.

The Youth Sports Program, designed as an "open gym" concept, was available to children ages 8 to 18 years old to offer a safe environment for them play. Unfortunately, due to a lack of financial support, the program was recently discontinued.

With the help of CFGP and other donors, the Community Center at Visitation is now able to revamp and re-open their Youth Sports Program. The new and improved program will feature fit tests, personal training, and a variety of sports including: soccer, flag football, basketball and volleyball. Walk-ins will also have the ability to participate in the program.

"Our primary purpose is to promote a healthy lifestyle in these children," said Sister Betty Scanlon, Executive Director of the Community Center.

The open gym sports program will reconvene on Saturdays and Mondays. In addition, the Center will host co-ed sports leagues that will take place on weekdays. "We're looking to target middle school and high school aged youth for our leagues," said Jasmine Rushum, Program Coordinator at the Community Center.

When asked about the grant, Sister Betty Scanlon responded, "We are just delighted. We don't charge for our services, so there isn't any real stream of revenue coming in. It really comes down to a partnership with organizations like the Foundation where we really wouldn't be able to exist without that, so we are so grateful."

"This is the best part of the work that the Foundation does," said Mr. Shannon Jordan, Executive Director of CFGP. "Getting to come out and see how the Foundation makes a difference in the lives of those in the community is just wonderful."
