The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia awarded Red Hill Farm, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis, a Community Impact Award of $500. The Award will assist Red Hill Farm in continuing their Student Farm Project, which offers lessons on healthy eating, cooking, plant science and organic farming. Ms. Margaret Lilley, Manager of Red Hill Farm, and Sister Mary Vandergeest, Executive Director of the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, received the award on behalf of the Farm.
“We’re so happy to be here and to be giving an award to an organization who’s concerned with both the environment and childhood education,” said Mr. Shannon Jordan, Executive Director of The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia.
Red Hill Farm’s Student Farm Project is offered to the 3rd and 6th graders of Drexel Neumann Academy, an elementary school in Chester, PA. Drexel Neumann Academy is the last Catholic school existing in the city of Chester.
“The school is thriving,” said Sr. Mary Vandergeest. “Some of their early graduates now are going to college and have gotten scholarships.”
For the city of Chester, the success of students who have attended Drexel Neumann Academy is inspiring. The Academy serves as a safe haven for its children, educating and preparing them for their high school careers. Providing them with extracurricular classes, such as those offered at Red Hill Farm, have opened the door to endless learning opportunities while also giving students something to look forward to.
“They are very excited and eager to learn,” said Ms. Margaret Lilley. “They are all very talented, very adventurous, and we hope that they go home and encourage their parents to cook this way and purchase the ingredients we’re teaching them about.”
Red Hill Farm is also a participant in the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, where local families can purchase shares on the farm to receive fresh produce on a weekly basis. The CSA season runs from early June to mid-November.
Congratulations to Red Hill Farm! Thank you for all of the work that you do.
