Community Impact Awards

Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School

June 9th, 2015

The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia issued their most recent Community Impact Award to Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School. This $500 award will be used for improvements of the school's classrooms as they prepare to expand over the next academic year. The Award was presented by CFGP Board of Trustees member and Grant Committee Chairman, Dr. Tammy Tenaglia, and CFGP Executive Director, Mr. Shannon Jordan, to Mr. John McConnell, Cristo Rey's Founder and President, and Dr. Michael Gomez, Cristo Rey’s Principal.

Founded in 2012, Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School is a private, independent, Catholic preparatory school operating with a unique mission. Partnering with local businesses and universities, Cristo Rey not only offers its students a quality education, but also requires them to work five days per month at highly esteemed businesses across the Philadelphia region. Cristo Rey's philosophy is rooted in the belief that by combining education with professional work experience, students will develop at an accelerated rate, giving them an edge in life after high school and college. So far, their strategy has been extremely successful.

"This is one of the best projects that you could ever invest in," said Ms. Cindy Handler, Business Literacy Instructor at Cristo Rey. "These students are amazing and they're going to make such a difference in this city. It's going to be great to watch."

Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School is one of 28 schools within the very successful Cristo Rey Network nationwide. Established in 1996 by Jesuit priest Father Foley, the Cristo Rey Network now witnesses a 100% college acceptance rate. As Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School begins to round out its final academic year before graduating their first class, they are preparing to achieve those same figures.

"Nationwide, Cristo Rey students actually graduate college at a rate triple of what Philadelphia public high school students do," said Nancy Green, Director of Development for Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School. "We are hoping to see those numbers here, too."

Outside of Cristo Rey's extensive core curriculum including classes in Math, Science, History, English, Latin, Theology, and health and fitness, they also offer students a wide variety of extracurricular sports and programs such as Soccer, Basketball, Student Government, and Ballroom Dancing.

The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia is thrilled to have given its latest Community Impact Award to Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School. CFGP hopes to assist Cristo Rey in their mission to grow their campus and its services offered to students. CFGP believes in the Cristo Rey philosophy and is excited to see what lies ahead for their soon-to-be graduates!
